A Look at the Strategies Behind Good and Bad Sports Betting Picks

Theory is great but I think the best way to learn is to look at actual sports betting picks and outcomes.

It is also worthwhile looking at some of the different 'strategies' that appear all over the internet. These often sound great but, when scrutinised with cold, hard logic do they stack up? I have never found one yet that does, but we shall see.

I think it is wise to be very cautious about believing claims that a certain system or plan works for a specific sport eg if someone claims that their system is foolproof for basketball I'd be keen to understand what makes basketball so special that this strategy won't work on other sports. My belief is that the principles of value betting that I am a fan of work equally well or badly on all sports, depending on the skill of the punter.

Having said that there are obviously some practical differences on the way to approach betting on each sport so I will separate this section into various sports.

One of my favourite sports to bet on is cricket. The matches last for such a long time and it is often a matter of debate throughout as to which team is on top - as a result value opportunities do often arise. Also, for a sport which is so heavily analysed and for which so many statistics are available, people often analyse it based on a surprisingly large amount of emotion and sentiment. Once again, this creates opportunities for the icy-cold, empotionless punter who deals in facts.

No site about sports betting would be complete without discussing the sport of kings - horse racing. Here is my horse racing betting diary.

I am also prepared to apply the principles of this site to betting on the world's biggest sport - click here to see how I go betting on football.

One of my least favourite sports to bet on is greyhound racing. Occasionally (very occasionally) I enjoy a night at the dogs and have a drink and a laugh and a bet. But I very rarely win...

In Sydney (where I live) it is impossible to not be at least somewhat interested in the rugby codes during the winter months. Here are my results for rugby league betting and rugby union betting.
