Betting On Sports Can Be Financially Rewarding But Also Damn Good Fun
I (and loads of people I know) have had nothing but great pleasure in betting on sports. Yet the words 'gambling' and 'betting' often bring to mind images of sad people throwing away their money in a hopeless attempt at getting rich.
If you are about to watch a game of football with friends and don't really care who is going to win, having $20 on the outcome can suddenly make it a whole lot more interesting. And it is not a waste of money either - you'd think nothing of spending $20 at the movies - where it is guaranteed that you will 'lose' your outlay. But if you put some money on a football or baseball game you get the increased entertainment value plus the bonus that you may well win!
Those people who are addicted to gambling need help. But for the majority, punting for the pleasure of it is a harmless and enjoyable activity. In some countries a love of the punt is actually an integral part of the national psyche - eg in Australia, where an event like the
Melbourne Cup
has to be seen to be believed.
Obviously the most important two principles are (1) Don't invest more than you can afford and (2) Don't expect to win. The bet is designed to greatly increase your interest in the event - but if it is going to make you feel sick with nerves and fear, keep your money in your wallet.
